3 Ways To Make Corporate Housing Feel More Like Home
Posted on: 6 October 2020
When you must work away from home, corporate housing is a good alternative to "living out of a suitcase". But it's still not quite home. How can you make it feel more like home and less like a hotel? Here are three things any distance-based worker can do.
1. Keep Routines
Do what you can to extend the activities you do at home to your new, temporary living space. If you like to cook or bake, for example, look for an apartment with a decent kitchen and baking utensils. Bring your own favorite cooking paraphernalia and set aside time to make your own meals as often as possible. You might even get to know some of your temporary coworkers by inviting them for a meal.
Doing the things that make you happy will make you feel more at home. It will also make the move feel less like an interruption in your normal life.
2. Bring The Family
Depending on the length of your out-of-town assignment, you may be able to bring your home to you by bringing the family along. Long-term assignments may be amenable to moving the whole family to stay with you in the new city. Kids get a new adventure and everyone gets to spend quality time together.
Mid-range or shorter assignments may not make a full-time move possible, but you should consider having the family visit on different weekends or even for a week or two when possible.
3. Pack Personal Items
What makes you feel at home when you are in your own house? The answers are unique to each person. For some, it might be your favorite luxury linens. Others might value their favorite family photos. Whatever it may be, can you bring some of these home amenities to your new space?
While you may not be able to bring your entire photo collection to a temporary apartment, you can probably bring a significant portion to enjoy. Taking the step to bring this piece of home with you will reduce stress and make your stay more enjoyable.
If you think about what makes you comfortable in your own home—ranging from your routines to your family to your personal belongings—you'll be able to find ways to translate these into something that you can take with you during a temporary stay.
